OU - Its full of Stars

Err, well actually it won't be. Having persuaded myself that a 10pt filler over Christmas was a good idea, and that I would like to pursue a curiosity that I have for Astronomy, I thought that I would sign up for S194.

But, I have now decided that I would rather spend the time working towards some non-OU Java qualifications - such as those from Sun. It would be good to think that my employer might chip on the money side (since I work for an IT firm) but, alas, they don't think that I should be learning Java! Thats right, I work for an IT company that would rather not help their employees further their IT skills (thats why they don't financially help with my OU studies either).

So, as soon as M359 is out of the way (and I can't wait) I'll be heavily into Java up until late January when MT262 (which is C++) kicks off.

Must brush up the old CV!

Seems like change is in the air.. Its a real shame to hear that your employer won't support you in your personal development. I don't understand some companies train of thought sometimes, if they don't develop you, you are likely to look for an employer who will, but some of them believe if they develop you, you will leave with your new skills.

I'm fortunate enough to have an employer who suports me financially, although there is a catch, if you leave employment within a year of completeing the course you have to repay the support your received. Its fair enough really.

Keep up with the blog, I do follow it regularly!

Hi Simon, Its good to hear that you receive financial help. I should have said previously that my employer does give me three paid days a year for studying - one for the exam, and two for revision, provided that I don't take them all in one go. So its not as if they are averse to me doing a degree course. But they turn over £2.5 billion per year, spending a little bit in supporting the staff would seem reasonable to me!
